First Prize Works-On-Paper:No. 8 "Southern Peninsula SA"
by Brian Stratton
Judges Comment: "This work clearly demonstrates a mastery of the watercolour medium. Despite the straight forwardness of the subject matter, the inventiveness of this work lies in its reduced palette, the ‘repetition’ of a single motif, the omission of the horizon line, a balance between simplicity and synthesis with complexity and detail, and the pictorial flatness of the composition. It is Modernist yet also Romantic in its sensibilities."
Second Prize Works-On-Paper:
No. 88 "Chieftain"
by Susheela Gri
Judges Comment: "Though a literal depiction—a study of the human form in light and shadow with sentimental overtones—the artist has captured a strong sense of the sitter’s character, the aging topography of the face, and the complexity of a head-covering that demonstrates a high level of technical skill and confidence in the watercolour medium. Compositionally, the simple and rich purple background is a pleasant foil to the detail of the figure."
Judges Comment: "‘Near Tarana’ shows a good command of the medium and captures an impressionistic sense of place. The abstract treatment of the foreground (the flora/fields) and the visual granularity of the clouds per the wash technique is most appealing."
